June 4: That time I shut down a theme park ride.

I can now cross “single-handedly shut down a theme park ride” from my bucket list.

I was preparing to ride Men In Black: Alien Attack, when I pulled the gun from its holder in front of me and found a stray loose M2 or M3×10mm hex-screw in the holder. From the size and where I found it I assume it worked itself loose from the gun—after all, the attraction’s been open 25 years and these guns go through all kinds of abuse.

Apparently when the TMs overheard me and I shared my discovery, it was enough to trip the safety protocol, escort us off of the ride, and shut down the attraction for 10–15 minutes while they sent all of the ride vehicles through empty for a cycle to ensure nothing was wrong with the ride before letting us back on.

You have to hand it to Universal Orlando’s concerns about ride safety when a tiny little 3mm by 10mm screw sets off a safety shutdown and inspection.
